It’s time to STOP & NOTICE

Try this to wake up your senses & get your creative juices flowing.

Hey Frogs & Toads, thanks for coming back for your court-ordered appointment with The Doc!

Here’s this week’s prescription for getting your mind ready & primed for some creativity:

Firstly, creativity isn’t something you can just turn on and off. It’s not the light in the fridge. (Does the light in your fridge turn on and off? I can never quite catch mine in time to see.)

No, ma’am. It’s not that easy.

You need to warm it up. Get it primed and ready. Make it feel good, y’know?

Put it this way - let’s say you’re a basketball player; if you want to have a good game, it’s best to stretch beforehand. Maybe do some layups, or take a couple practice free throws.

Making great creative work is no different. It all starts with the warm-up.

But how do you get your brain to play like it’s Jeremy Lin in February of 2012? (If you don’t know, google it)

Well, here’s a good one…

Stop & Notice

Start by getting comfortable. Sit or lay down.

Once your bones are settled, close your eyes.

(By the way, I understand that you’re reading this right now, so read first and then remember to lay down and close your eyes afterward)

Now, clear your mind and pay attention.

Repeat the sentence “And now I’m noticing…” over and over.

Each time, fill in the ending with something different.

There’s no wrong way to notice.

Notice how your body feels. Is there any part of you that feels tense, or clenched? If so, release.

Maybe your cheeks are tingling, your brow is itchy, or your bad foot is getting really, really cold again.

Just notice.

“And now I’m noticing…”

Maybe your knees are sore. Throbbing, more like it.

You knew that dunking on that 8 foot rim at the Y was a bad idea, and that you’d pay for it later, but the look in those teens eyes as you pulled a perfect 360 was pretty damn worth it.

Or maybe you didn’t quite 10/10 your last wipe, and now you’re noticing that there’s a bit of an itch a brewin’ down there.

Whatever. Just keep noticing.

“And now I’m noticing…”

Notice the birds chirping outside your window; it sounds like they’re having an argument. Maybe it’s over caw-stody of the hatchling.

Or maybe your neighbor is watching Shrek 2 with their windows open for the second time this week, and it’s only Tuesday.

Or maybe you’re noticing the humming coming from the fridge. That IS the fridge, right? That’s not the 5G signals, is it?! Oh God. Oh fuck oh fuck oh FUCK…

“And now I’m noticing…”

Maybe you had a sip of delicious, crisp apple cider earlier, and you can still taste the echoes of that tart-y goodness dancing on your taste buds.

Or maybe you just did an inside-burp, and wondering when the hell you ate salami.

 “And now I’m noticing…”

Maybe you smell a fresh pie, cooling on a nearby windowsill. Do NOT start levitating by your nose and float over there.

Or maybe you finally smell what The Rock’s been cookin’ for all these years.

“And now I’m noticing…” [fill in the blank]

“And now I’m noticing…” [fill in the blank]

“And now I’m noticing…” [fill in the blank]

Don’t think, just notice.

That’s how it’s done. Try it now, even for just a minute. Or do it for 15. Or however long you want.

I like to go for 10 minutes, or sometimes I’ll do 50-100 notices.

Do this exercise to warm up your senses and boost your creativity.

Oh, and by the way, you just meditated, sucker! Ha ha!

Shifting gears; I’ve got some exciting news to share if you’re in or around the Montreal area. I’ve got a couple fun (and FREE) creative events lined up this summer, and I’d love to see you there!

Sunday, June 8th, we’re making art & watching Game 3 of the 2025 NBA Finals at Burgundy Lion (upstairs). Check out all the details here and reserve a spot, there’s limited spaces:

AND… Sunday, July 13th, come to the Dr Lemco Vernissage, where I’ll finally be showing some of my art (it’s also my bday hehe):

Reserve you free tickets now!

I’ve got a few more cool ones in the works; I’ll be sure to tell y’all first once they’re made available.

That’s all for this week, gang. Let me know how your noticing practice went, I’d love to hear about your experience. Did anything stand out?

I’ll see you next week for another creative prescription. Until then, remember: don’t do anything I wouldn’t prescribe.

Big love,
